Mijas is a popular tourist destination on Costa del Sol, located just a few kilometres inland from Fuengirola, and only 25 minutes drive from Malaga. This charming traditional Spanish town is situated 428 meters above sea level, in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas in a spectacular setting of leafy pine forests and green slopes.
Another popular sightseeing attraction in Mijas is the legendary hermitage of the ‘Virgen de la Peña’ built by Mercedarian monks in the 17th century. The Virgin of the Rock is said to have miraculously appeared there in front of two young shepherds in 1586. Today, local people honour the patron saint of Mijas by decorating the small shrine sheletered by a cave with flowers and pictures.
Other attractions in Mijas include the 17th century church of Immaculate Conception, the bull ring, donkey carriages, ethnographic museum Casa Museo or race courses organized on the Hipodromo de Mijas.
Mijas boasts an impressive karting racecourse on Avenida del Hipódromo. It’s a great way to spend a day full of action and adrenaline. The outdoor circuit is almost 1000 metre long with twists and turns of all kinds. There are 160cc karts for kids, 270cc karts for adults as well as two-seaters available!
